sony ericsson newww

Paris.JPG

A few days ago, we brought you a couple of pictures of the upcoming Sony Ericsson Paris. Now, we have some more, well actually a lot more, courtesy of mobile-review.com. A guy over at their forums got some hands-on time with the new device and posted his views on it.

According to him, there aren't too many discernible differences in the new UIQ 3.3 interface and the same goes for the hardware putting it next SE's G700 and G900. He goes on to give a better opinion about its applications and the aGPS with the 5-megapixel camera being a bit better than the one on G900. Here are some confirmed specs of the Paris so far:

  • 5-megapixel camera
  • aGPS and Google Maps and WayFinder
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • 2.6-inch screen
  • 960mAH battery
  • QWERTY keyboard/touch-sensitive buttons
  • Widgets Application
  • New browser version
  • Symbian UIQ ver3.3

It wouldn't be wrong to say that 2008 is the year of the touchscreen phones. We have already seen the Xperia X1, the Tube, the 3G iPhone, the Vu, and the awesomeness called Touch Diamond, not to forget the Xenium 800 from Philips. That's pretty much every major cell phone manufacturer out there people! Here's one more touchscreen device from Sony Ericsson, which is codenamed Paris.

The Paris looks to be a slider with a humongous screen and runs on Symbian UIQ 3.3, the latest version of UIQ after it was acquired by Sony Ericsson. As we can garner from the pictures, the phone has a 5-megapixel camera and a QWERTY keypad. There is no info on whether it has HSDPA/HSUPA, GPS, or if the screen is VGA, but if all these points tally up, we will have one more hot contender for the HTC Diamond, don't you think?

W350i.jpgMost of Sony Ericsson phones tend to be on the pricey side, but every once in a while, the company releases a phone that is appealing and affordable to the masses. This time, SE has rolled out the Sony Ericsson W350i Walkman Phone.

The W350i has a small but roomy design. It is fashioned as a small portable music player - hence, its part of Sony Ericsson's ever expanding line of Walkman phones. The W350i stores up to 470 songs on the memory card. The W350i has the excellent TrackID feature. The W350i keeps you entertained. Tune in the FM radio to your favorite station, or try a solo - the W350i also comes pre-loaded with Guitar Legend, a mobile game for rock'n'roll buffs.

Other usual niceties include PhotoDJ and VideoDJ to manage/edit your photos and video clips. The C902 supports Memory Stick Micro (M2) memory card.

Xperia X1

It's funny how companies try to keep new products under wraps, and sometimes the most innocent of things reveals them. This time, it's the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 device, a Windows Mobile phone slated for a September 2008 release. That may seem far away, but for those eagerly waiting for the device - you know it's worth it.

The news was leaked thanks to Handango's newsletter. The Xperia X1, which will come with Handango's InHand service built-in, features a WVGA resolution screen (800x480 pixels). Obviously, the phone will be available in multiple languages.

    Sony Ericsson's Beibei

One more Sony Ericsson leak for the day, the daftly codenamed "beibei." It looks like the guys over at Yesky were able to get their hands on an actual device, based on the quality of the pictures available. There isn't much detail available on the device, unlike the P5 and G502 we reported on earlier but what is known is that beibei belongs to the Walkman series from SE and will run on Symbian OS 9.3 with the new UIQ 3.3 user interface (with Demand Paging support). The device has a display smaller than the usual touchscreen phones and curiously more buttons than is the norm for a touchscreen smartphone. Also, from one of the pictures, we can see that the phone does have WiFi connectivity. That's about it as far as the details go about this mysterious device.

Of course, nothing can be confirmed until the official announcement by Sony Ericsson in the future, and we will be sure to let you know when they do. Meanwhile, take a look at some more pictures of "beibei" after the break.

    Sony Ericsson PSP Phone Concept

    sony-ericsson-psp-phone-concept-looks-great-2.jpg

Sony Ericsson patented a PSP phone concept a while back, proving that Sony had some interest in developing a PSP phone model. At the time, it was more than likely not a priority, but that̢۪s starting to change.

Consumer interest in the idea has really increased lately and could force Sony to at least take a look at the idea again. The above image is a PSP phone concept created by a random internet user. Although Sony would probably never go with a design idea from someone random, if the idea catches on, they will have no choice but to consider the ideas flying around the internet.

Yesterday at the Old Billingsgate Market in London, Nokia unveiled two new music phones, the Nokia 5310 (pictured) and 5610 XpressMusic, a new multimedia phone called the Nokia N81 and an updated Nokia N95 that comes with 8GB of onboard memory.

Interestingly, the event wasn't just about new handsets -- Nokia also announced the start of a new music store, a content site called Ovi, which apparently means 'door' in Finnish, and showed off the new and improved N-Gage platform that will run on N-Series handsets. For a quick look at what Ovi offers, click play on the video below.

t seems that Motorola (MOT) comes out with a good handset that everybody wants every five years or so. Considering that, we have a couple more years to go until the company will have another blockbuster handset again. This failure by Motorola is a big positive for Nokia (NOK) on many fronts.

Buy Moto, Hello NokiaOr to piggyback on a well-known Motorola advertising tagline: Goodbye, Moto — and hello, Nokia.

First, it shows that Nokia’s management can execute despite not having the “hottest” phone on the market (i.e. Motorola’s Razr). Also, it will be further taking market share from Motorola; I estimate its margins will further improve, driving its earnings north of $2 a share over the next couple of years. After seeing Nokia’s second-quarter results, that estimate could come sooner rather than later.

The best part is Nokia doesn’t have to do anything heroic to achieve that goal. Operational leverage (higher volumes spread over fixed costs) and a shift to a higher margin (more feature-rich phones) will do the work. This was the driver of the company’s truly incredible operating performance in the second quarter.

The second quarter was simply spectacular: operating profit in every segment with the exception of its networks division grew in the high double digits, and sales climbed a whopping 28%.

At the current share price, you are not really paying for the network segment, in fact, since it loses money it detracts from the company’s valuation. But at some point its profitability will turn positive and the division will become a contributor to Nokia’s bottom line.

Samsung is a conglomerate, and although it’s a good one, it still lacks Nokia’s focus. Despite being located in a lower labor-cost part of the world, South Korea-based Samsung doesn’t have a cost advantage against Nokia, as Finland-based Nokia manufactures its phones all over the world, including in China. Nokia has proved to be the Dell of cell phones from a cost-structure and manufacturing-efficiency perspective and Apple-like when it comes to innovation — it comes out with several dozen phones year after year.

There is still upside in Nokia’s global market share, because Nokia has just a small market share in the U.S., accounting for only 4% of its volume. It is only a matter of time before Nokia starts taking market share in the U.S.; it has already started to design U.S.-centric phones. As Nokia regains market share in the U.S., this will drive its global market share. Despite not having the phones in the U.S. that consumers seemed to want, Nokia still has an excellent brand reputation in the U.S., so it just needs to fix relationships with U.S. carriers (AT&T (T) , Verizon (VZ) and T-Mobile) and start selling phones that the rest of the world is so crazy about.
